It seemed no time at all since we were in the Robot Wars arena having a few tussles with Revolution, Direct Action, ICU, Thor and Mute.  Before we knew it Storm II was the New Blood Grand Champion, and automatically qualified for Series 7 of Robot Wars - as the 16th seed.

Between the filming of Robot Wars Extreme and Series 7 a lot changed in Robot Wars world.  A highly controversial set of new rules came out which now made it one of the rules that all robots must have an active weapon. The team rose to the challenge and with a hand from a couple of our friends (Dave Gamble, George Francis and John Reid) we not only put a weapon in, but gave Storm II more armour, more speed and more POWER !

This year we had a new team member join us, at the time Tim's girlfriend, then later fiancée and now wife Meral

Meral came along as our third team member to help keep us on the straight and narrow - to help us out during the nightmare that is amusingly just called 'filming'.
The Team at Filming of Robot Wars Series 7

While we're taling about changes and additions, the major changes from Extreme II to Series 7 are as follows :

  • 3 x 230amp new speed controllers fitting into a space only 230mm x 90mm x 50mm to replace our 4QDs
  • Electro-mechanical lifter mechanism jointly designed by the Storm and Terrorhurtz teams
  • New wheel compound, a custom made variant of Vulkollan, specifically designed for us
  • 1/2" thick Titanium amour around the sides of the robot (upgraded from just 3mm in Extreme II)
  • 1/2" thick Titanium front scoop (upgraded from 6mm in Extreme II)
  • Totally new internal layout with smaller compact gearboxes (motor and gearbox weigh less than 3.5Kg now)
  • Up rated drive train with all components now machined from case hardened EN36 steel
  • New lightweight components CNC machined from 7075 Aluminium to replace heavy steel components used in Extreme II

It took a great deal of work to transform Storm II from the machine that did Extreme II to the machine that rolled into the arena at the start of Series 7 - it was not just a great effort by the team, but by the team and all those who supported us.  We even had time to paint it thanks to Lucy (Tim's sister) and Meral, both co-opted onto the team to help out !  Even this effort was repaid as Jayne announced that we were the best looking most pristine robot she had ever seen !

Storm II had been transformed from a low-tech (yet powerful) machine to a Formula 1-esqe extreme piece of Robot Fighting equipment.

The Series VII Road to Victory

As one of our very good friends in Team Tornado would be saying about now - "Bring it on"

So how do you want to hear the story of Series 7 ?  Do you want to hear the 'official' Team Storm version, or do you want to hear from Tim or Meral - have a look below and read the amazing story of Storm II at Robot Wars Series 7 from different viewpoints.  Was Series 7 a fix, were Mentorn the producers of Robot Wars out to get the 'little black box' that was Storm II..... ?

Tim and Meral Both Tim and Meral (Tim being the other half of Team Storm from myself), and Meral, his wife have taken the time to write their view of what the show was like.

Tim is an old hand at this Robot Wars lark - having been in the team since the start and gives a view from another roboteer at filming

Meral was new to all this though - Roboteering was something that came as part of the package when she started seeing Tim.  Did she have any idea what she had let herself in for - read on to find out. Now of course Meral is an old hand and is more than capable of helping strip Storm II down in the pits !
