NATIONAL KIT CAR FESTIVAL, NEWARK - 16th and 17th  June 2001

Following our performance at the Chertsey event last weekend, we knew that we had some work to do on Storm to get it to a point where it could safely compete at events.  If you want to see what work was done during the week - check out our diary entries.

We arrived at the event at about 1pm on the Saturday with only the armour to bolt on - we put the new armour on, gave the wheels a spin to check everything was running freely and dropped Storm into the arena - all a little unsure of how Storm would behave !  The new gear ratios had never been tested, nor had the receiver modifications.  We all held our breath as Storm manoeuvred out into the arena.  It was certainly very nippy, but the question was - had we cured our chains problem and steering issues.

I decided to take Storm for a parade around the arena and was overjoyed when Storm literally Stormed around the arena sending up clouds of dust in its wake.  Skid steering and power sliding around the arena Storm instantly got attention from the public - and from the pits.  In particular from those people who had seen Storm before as a rather cumbersome slow moving object.  It was now as fast as Chaos 2 - and in George Francis own words when we gave him the controls "wow - its great!".

Anyway, back to the event.  We took part in football mostly as the event wasn't really about one on one fighting.  We were in with Dantomkia and Leveller 2.  Storm was running well, although most people had forgotten about doing anything with the football.  Unfortunately one of the weak points of the chassis got bent (I say that because we knew it was weak and had considered taking it off).  Thankfully Leveller 2 did the work for us and hit it hard enough to crack a weld meaning we could hammer off the offending bit of chassis in the pits.  We also chipped a bit of polycarb, but that's just because of our problems with the polycarb we are running

We ran again later in the afternoon - with Storm still looking very strong in the arena.

Overnight we carried out some repairs to Storm and popped in to see how Tornado were getting on for Extreme which is only a week or so away now.  Saw their new speed controllers and some of their new armour - very impressive I have to say..... but back to the event.

We arrived bright and early the next morning at about 9:30 with a fully working Storm ready to go into the arena.  The first event was at about 11:15 so we had time to wander around the show a bit.

Again we played football with Stinger and Humphrey this time.  Another good show, Storm flying around the arena, and warranting this comment from an onlooker "Storm doing there impression of a dust storm by kicking up all the dust on the floor with their powerful skid steer bot".   Not sure that we would class Storm as a powerful skid steer bot.... well not the generation that they were looking at - we thought it was a rather underpowered skid steer bot, but the general consensus of opinion was that it was quite a machine (which we were quite happy with).

Our next event is Wilsons Day which we have some hard choices to make for.  Do we get Storm ready (as in Storm for RW5) or do we just make some modifications to the prototype to run....... ?
