Featherweights

The Featherweight category in Robot Wars was one that had been largely overlooked until it was heavily promoted through the Young Engineers in the BT Robot Challenge.  Team Storm were enlisted as technical consultants to the robot challenge and it gave us the desire to try to see just how we could develop some robots in the class to show people just what could be done in 12Kg

Storm Vortex was built in 2003 and is still one of the most effective spinner featherweight robots.  With an S28-150 Magmotor delivering the same power as the Heavyweight robot Hypnodisc driving a 2Kg disk Vortex was simply unstoppable once it got hold of you.  Vortex was known for its cast-iron reliability and it rarely lost a fight.  Today Vortex is retired, but you never know when you might see the old veteran returning.  Vortex was to featherweights what Hypnodisc was to heavyweights, a total change from dull lumbering featherweights into something seriously scary.

Force X (Force 10) pre-dates Storm Vortex and goes back even further being built in last 2001/2002.  It was the first featherweight to use the 'Bosch 35w' motors that can now be seen in many featherweights and the first featherweight to deliver a weapon other than a simple lifter.  Delivering over 750Kg of crush from the same linear actuators that the likes of Suicidal Tendencies used on their heavyweight robot, Force X gave a first glimpse into what could be done in this featherweight weight category.

Team Storm haven't given up on the featherweight category and have a number of projects which are embryonic including Horizon a horizontal spinner concept we created about 2 years ago that would still be class leading today as well as Storm IIB, a mini featherweight Storm II
